And its true, cocaine is most commonly abused as an illicit drug. However, although rarely discussed, cocaine also has medical uses. Cocaine has many legitimate uses and is an excellent topical anesthetic. (Topical means applied to the skin.) For example, consider the following position statement: The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Inc. considers cocaine to be a valuable anesthetic and vasoconstricting agent when used as part of the treatment of a patient by a physician. No other single drug combines the anesthetic and vasoconstricting properties of cocaine. Medical Use of Cocaine as an Anesthetic The fact that cocaine has anesthetic properties is unsurprising since cocaine and lidocaine are chemical cousins, and lidocaine is used as an anesthetic during dental procedures.?? Nevertheless, its compelling to take a closer look at cocaine as a medical treatment. Cocaine is a particularly effective local anesthetic that works by blocking nerve impulses. Specifically, by blocking norepinephrine uptake, cocaine causes vasoconstriction and anesthesia. As a medical treatment, cocaine is used during procedures involving the upper respiratory tract. In addition to anesthesia and vasoconstriction of the upper respiratory tract, cocaine also shrinks the mucosa or mucous membranes.?? Cocaine used during medical procedures comes in the form of a topical solution. This cocaine hydrochloride solution comes in three different concentrations: 1%, 4%, or 10%. Because of potential toxicity, usually, only 1% or 4% solutions are used.?? Cocaine as a Street Drug On the street, cocaine is sold as a crystalline powder. This powder is diluted or cut with sugars to increase its street value. Cocaine is also turned into crack, which takes the form of irregularly shaped chunks that are called rocks. Powdered cocaine can either be snorted or dissolved in water and turned into a solution that is injected into veins. Crack is smoked. When ingested, cocaine causes euphoria. It can also cause increased alertness, restlessness, irritability, and paranoia. Cocaine increases blood pressure and heart rate and can lead to heart attack and stroke.?? Actions and Effects of Cocaine Cocaine is an alkaloid derivative refined from coca leaves. Coca leaves grow on Erythroxylum Coca, a plant commonly found in South America. Cocaine is readily absorbed across mucous membranes including the linings of the nose and mouth, which explains why people who abuse the drug snort it or rub it on their gums. As a drug of abuse, cocaine works on the brain by blocking the reuptake of dopamineâ"the feel good neurotransmitter. Cocaine also works by blocking the reuptake of the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine, which also contribute to a short-lasting rush or euphoria experienced after ingestion.?? Other effects of the drug include increased heart rate and increased blood pressure as well as a boost in self-confidence, vigilance, and well-being. Over time, the chronic use of cocaine reduces the concentration of neurotransmitter metabolites thus permanently interfering brain function. Signs of chronic abuse include an intense craving for more drug and feelings of irritability, violent outbursts, paranoia, and depression. Repeated doses may also lead to involuntary motor activity, heart disease, seizures, psychoses, respiratory failure, sexual dysfunction, and death.?? In addition to powder, cocaine can also be abused in the form of crack. Crack is a yellow-white rock processed with ammonia or baking soda. Crack rock is smoked or freebased using a crack pipe. Crack is even more potent, addictive, and dangerous than cocaine powder. People who have used crack only once have become addicted. Furthermore, crack pipes burn so hot that they can damage the lips and mouth resulting in bleeding. When people share a crack pipe, they can also share blood-borne diseases like HIV. A Word From Verywell Cocaine probably suffers from an image problem. Because most people automatically associate this drug with abuse, its use is feared, reviled, or parodied. In reality, however, like many other drugs that are often abused, including marijuana, opioids, and (possibly) MDMA, cocaine does have legitimate and beneficial uses. Please note, however, that the clinical uses of cocaine are absolutely confined to a clinical setting when administered by a physician. Cocaine bought off the street is always dangerous.

Heavy Metal Music Free Essays
Imagine, if you will, being surrounded by millions of people, waiting in anticipation for the band to come on. You canââ¬â¢t breathe because the people are being squeezed into you by their neighbors. You are sweating, trying to catch every bit of oxygen you can from the air, while others are jumping up and down, hitting you as they wait for the band. We will write a custom essay sample on Heavy Metal Music or any similar topic only for you Order Now Finally, the band comes on stage and you are excited, and they start with: (play music here). This, is what heavy metal music is all about. I have been listening to heavy metal music since I was an infant. My first CD was Metallicaââ¬â¢s Master of Puppets CD that my dad let me have. I have researched many heavy metal bands as the years have gone by. I know what you are thinking, what does heavy metal music have to do with me? Well, metal music is all around you. You can walk down the street and hear someoneââ¬â¢s radio playing it. You can hear it in some rap songs, like; ââ¬Å"Bring the Noizeâ⬠by Public Enemy with Anthrax, and ââ¬Å"Letââ¬â¢s Goâ⬠by Trick Daddy who took the intro of ââ¬Å"Crazy Trainâ⬠by Ozzy Osbourne, and put a beat over it. You can even hear it in country music from Cross Canadian Ragweed as they took a solo by heavy metal guitarist Dimebag Darrell and put it in their song, ââ¬Å"Dimebag.â⬠Heavy metal music is one of the most copied genres of music out there. Today I am going to tell you about what heavy metal really is, the beginning of heavy metal, and the impact that heavy metal has had on todayââ¬â¢s society. First, what is heavy metal music? Dee Snider, the spokesman of all that is heavy metal, defines metal as, ââ¬Å"Drum-pounding-, bass-booming-, guitar-distorted-, and singer-belting-music.â⬠That is the worldwide definition of heavy metal. Heavy metal brings together three genres of music, blues, psychedelic rock, and classical music. Early bands included keyboards, or organs, into their music, but recent bands have gone away from using the keyboard. Heavy metal usually, but not always, contains a single formula. A drummer, a bassist, a rhythm guitarist, a lead guitarist, and a singer, who may or may not play some kind of instrument. With this formula, it is obvious that their music is purely based on the instruments. A heavy metal drummer uses a larger drum setup than most other rock genres. The singer of the heavy metal band is very important, equally important as the guitarists. The singers can have a large vocal range, like that of Ronnie James Dio of the band Rainbow, or they can be mellow like that of James Hetfield of Metallica. The guitaristsââ¬â¢ high distortion is the key to metal music. This gives it the heavy metal ââ¬Å"sound.â⬠Also, unlike many other genres of rock, the bassist is important to the band. It is not uncommon to hear a bassist throw in his/her own solo into the song. As a whole, the band uses very high volume. The louder the music, the better. Now that you know what heavy metal is, I will tell you about the beginning of it. The start of metal can be very confusing. For instance, Deena Weinstein, in her book, Heavy Metal: The Music and Its Culture, credited Black Sabbath with the start of heavy metal, but this is not entirely true. Carlos M. Pozo, in his book Caucasion Power Blues, wrote, ââ¬Å"Blue Cheerââ¬â¢s cover of ââ¬Å"Summertime Bluesâ⬠by Eddie Cochrane, is the first heavy metal song.â⬠ââ¬Å"In-A-Gadda-Da-Vidaâ⬠by Iron Butterfly is another one of the earliest heavy metal songs. Then, in 1969, came Black Sabbath. At about the same time as Sabbath, another big metal band emerged. This band went by the name of Led Zeppelin. Even though these two bands did not start heavy metal, they brought it to the public. Sabbath and Zeppelin are two of the most popular rock, let alone heavy metal, bands of all time. They faced much criticism at first, but as more people hated them, others started loving them. These people were the ââ¬Å"rebelsâ⬠, the ones that did not want to listen to their parents because it was their lives, not their parentsââ¬â¢. Because of these ââ¬Å"rebels,â⬠heavy metalââ¬â¢s popularity has grown drastically over the years. Regardless of what their parents said, they continued buying heavy metal albums, sometimes they even bought more than usual, in spite of their parents. This sparked rise of heavy metal in later years. That is how heavy metal began, now it is time to learn about the impact it has had on society. Heavy metal has had a drastic impact on society today. According to Encyclopedia Metallica, which is an online website that displays news about Metallica, ââ¬Å"All Metallica albums are banned in Jordan because newspapers called them ââ¬Å"satanistsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"devil-worshipers.â⬠People were listening to Metallica and destroying things around town, so they had to ban Metallica. During the ââ¬â¢80s, parents disliked the heavy metal music so much, they decided to try to get some kind of warning on the albums. This resulted in the Parental Advisory sticker on every explicit CD you see today. This is not the only impact that heavy metal music has had. In 1990, heavy metal band, Judas Priest, were sued because the parents of James Vance, and Ray Belknap believed that Priestââ¬â¢s music contained subliminal messages that forced these two men to commit suicide. It was found that these two men were highly suicidal before finding Judas Priest, therefore, Priest were found innocent. This is, yet, another situation where the parents dislike heavy metal so much, that they blame the bands for the death of their children. Sadly, this is a recurring action taken by the parents that will not stop until the hate of heavy metal music is gone, which will not happen any time soon. This is the impact that heavy metal has had on society. Heavy metal music has been alive since the ââ¬â¢60s. Even though Black Sabbath are credited with being the first worldwide popular heavy metal band, they did not start it. Heavy metal has become quite popular since it began, and has changed society from day one. So, today you learned what heavy metal music is, about the beginning of heavy metal, and itââ¬â¢s impact on society. So, I leave you with a quote from AC/DC, ââ¬Å"For those about to rock, we salute you!â⬠How to cite Heavy Metal Music, Papers

Mia Hamm Essay Example
Mia Hamm Paper Kelsey Williams Period 3 Gym 15 October 2012 Mia Hamm Mariel Margaret Hamm, otherwise known as Mia Hamm, was born in Selma, Alabama on March 17th, 1972. Mia Hamms brother recalls that she was extremely athletic even back then and that she would often compete with the other boys on the block in childhood games, often winning them. But earlier on, Mia Hamm had some problems with her legs, she was born with a partial clubfoot. This meant that she had to wear casts on her feet to correct this problem. Fortunately, the casts had a visible effect and Mia Hamm would soon fully recover. Throughout Mia Hamms childhood, she had to move a lot, because her father was in the Air Force. Once, her and her family went to Italy and it is there that Mia saw exactly what soccer is about. The Italians passion for soccer triggered an interest in soccer, when she was just 6 years old. After moving to Texas, she immediately picked up the sport and started playing for a local womens soccer youth club. | Unlike most other players that have to go through certain steps during their childhood, Mia Hamms career had a jump start at a very early age. With Mia dominating the youth competitions of womens soccer in Texas, it was only natural that she ended up in the spotlight of the United States national team staff. However, at age 14, she wasnt ready for that big of a leap, yet. One of the less known facts about Mia Hamm is that she also enjoyed watching and playing football. This helped her later on in her soccer career, increasing her strength, structure and aggressive spirit. She kept on playing soccer and one day, an impressive phone call got the young girl cheering throughout the house. She was called for the senior United States womens soccer team, becoming the youngest player in history to play on it. Fortunately, she did have a good constitution that allowed her to physically survive the difficulties of senior professional soccer at that level. Although she would not play much during her first few years on the team, those times were extremely important in her adaptation process. By the time Mia was seventeen, she already felt right at home on the United States squad and managed to score her first goal for the team, in a match against Canada. After finishing high school, Mia Hamm was already on her way to success, now constantly being called up to the national team. She started playing regularly. However, she chose to follow a University as well; the University of North Carolina. She began playing for the University of North Carolinaââ¬â¢s women soccer team, the Tar Heels, and lead them to a string of four straight national titles, in addition to being the team and the leagues all-time top scorer. | In 1991, she put her time with the University of North Carolina on hold. She was being called for her first World Cup, held in China. The United States team was put in a tough group against Brazil, Japan and Sweden. In their first match against Sweden, Mia Hamm managed a crucial 62 minute goal, and the USA team won 3-2. She had scored the winning goal. Their next match, against Brazil saw a wild United States Team with Mia Hamm as the MVP of the match, beating Brazil 5-0. In the last group match, against Japan, the United States womens soccer team beat Japan, 3-0. Coming back to the UNC, Mia Hamm was greeted as a hero and was soon given the nickname Jordan, as a reference to another North Carolina athlete of international fame, Michael Jordan. By that time, Mia Hamm, a soccer player that started out in a small Texas youth club, was already a World Champion at age twenty and had a wonderful career in front of her. When she finished studying at the University, Hamm focused merely on the US national squad, participating in the 1995 World Cup, where the United States ended up third. A moment bound to be remembered from that World Cup was when Mia Hamm went on to play as a goalkeeper, with no one left to play on this position. Despite the United States losing the title and the final, Mia Hamm was voted the Most Valuable Player of the World Cup. One year later, at the 1996 Olympic Games, Mia suffered an ankle injury that kept her off the field for a match, but she was able to recover for the final game, played against China. Hamm contributed decisively to the winning goal, her shot coming off the bar, only to be plunged back in the net by Shannon MacMillan. The United States had gotten another gold medal. Months before the World Cup started, Mia Hamm had already broken the record for most international goals scored by a male or female soccer player, hitting the net for the 108th time in a match against Brazil. Mia Hamms seventeen years with the United States squad brought her a lot of trophies and success. This included two World Cups, two World Cup bronze medals, two Olympic gold medals, and a silver medal. Mia Hamm also won the FIFA Womens Soccer Player of the Year twice, in 2001 and 2002. She currently holds the record for most international goals scored by a player, male or female, with an impressive amount of 158 goals. Mia was one of the only 2 women named on Peles 125 Best Soccer Players of All Times, next to USA national team colleague, Michelle Akers. Mia retired from soccer in 2004 at the age of 32, to start a family.

Prison Privitisation essays
Prison Privitisation essays Privatization in corrections is a trend that is assuming increasing significance. Pratt and Maahs, characterizing privatization in corrections as a growth industry go on to note: Rooted primarily in the political and economic context of the 1980s. The movement to privatize public services has received increasing support in response to taxpayer demands that government provide more services with fewer resources. Advocates of correctional privatization often argue from a public choice theoretical perspective... holding that private entities can provide correctional services at a lower cost than governmental agencies. At best, however, the empirical evidence for this claim- - the efficiency hypothesis- - remains inconclusive (1999, 358.) The practice of privatization has received its share of criticism, with concern being expressed over the possibility of prison conditions deteriorating as the result of an effort to save money on the part of government. Coercive confinement carries with it an obligation to meet the basic need of the prisoner, notes Logan in this regard. Thus, measures of health care, safety, sanitation, nutrition, and other aspects of basic living conditions are relevant. Furthermore, confinement must meet a constitutional standard of fairness and due process, so it is not just the effectiveness and efficiency, but also the procedural justice with which confinement is imposed that is important. This author goes on to characterize confinement as much more than just warehousing (Logan, 1992, 579.) The goal of confinement should be, instead, to promote the rehabilitation of prisoners and ensure that they are housed in decent and humane conditions. No one expects a prison to be a Holiday Inn, but all authorities agree that unless prisoners are assured a decent standard of living, as well as education and, job training, rehabilitation cannot take ...

Translating the English Verb Would in Spanish
Translating the English Verb Would in Spanish Translating the auxiliary English verb would isnt as straightforward as it might appear at first glance: Would has multiple uses - and in none of them is it readily translated as a single word. Would is used both to indicate tense as well as to indicate the speakers attitude toward a verbs action. In any case, the principle of translation is the same: Dont try to translate would as a word; translate it for what it means. Would in Conditional Statements One of the most common uses of would is in statements of the type if something were to happen, then something else would happen (or the same thing in a different order, something would happen If something else were to happen first). Nearly always, the would in such instances helps form the equivalent of the Spanish conditional tense: Si yo tuviera dinero, invertirà a en empresas espaà ±olas. (If I had money, I would invest in Spanish businesses.)Si yo fuera tà º, irà a al hospital. (If I were you, I would go to the hospital.)Rebecca ganarà a una buena nota en esta clase si estudiara ms. (Rebecca would earn a good grade in this class if she were to study more.)Si volviera a nacer, dormirà a menos y vivirà a ms. (If I were to be born again,l I would sleep less and live more.) It is common in both languages to make statements where the condition isnt directly stated. For example, the first two examples below are derived from the first two examples above with the condition omitted: Invertirà a en empresas espaà ±olas. (I would invest in Spanish businesses.)Yo irà a al hospital. (I would go to the hospital.)Me gustarà a una taza de cafà ©. (I would like a cup of coffee.)Soy de los que llorarà an como cuando algo muy preciado se pierde. (I am among those who would cry when something very expensive gets lost.) It is also possible to imply conditions without using the English if or Spanish si: El asesinato del presidente serà a un crimen de guerra. (Assassinating the president would be a war crime.)à ¿Nos costarà a mucho comer aquà ? (Would it cost us a lot to eat here?)Me prometià ³ que saldrà a conmigo. (She promised me that she would leave with me.) Would Referring to Past Repeated Events Another common use of would is to indicate that something happened as a matter of habit or custom. Most often, you can use the imperfect tense, the past tense of Spanish that is usually used to refer to actions that took place over an indefinite period of time. Durante el dà a trabajaba mucho. (During the day she would work a lot.)Recuerdo que viajbamos casi cada verano a Puerto Vallarta. (I remember that we would travel almost every summer to Puerto Vallarta.)Le exasperaban las quejas de sus hijos. (His childrens complaints would exasperate him.)Cuando ganbamos nadie decà a nada. (When we would win nobody would say anything.) Would Not Sometimes the negative form, wouldnt or would not, suggests a refusal to do something. The reflexive verb negarse can nearly always be used: Se negà ³ a estudiar otras alternativas. (He wouldnt study other alternatives.)Por eso me neguà © a firmar. (Because of that I wouldnt sign.)Me neguà © a comportarme como un adulto. (I wouldnt behave like an adult.) If would not or wouldnt is used as the equivalent of did not or didnt, it can be translated using either the imperfect or preterite tense. La radio del coche no me funcionà ³ en ese momento. (The car radio wouldnt work for me at that moment. The preterite is used here because the event occurred at a specific time.)Muchas veces la radio del coche no me funcionaba. (The car radio often wouldnt work for me. The imperfect is used here for a recurring event.)Esa noche no salieron juntos. (That night they wouldnt leave together.)Muchas veces no salà an del escritorio hasta entrada la noche. (They often wouldnt leave their desks until nighttime came.) Would as a Word of Politeness Often, would adds little meaning to a sentence but is used to make a request polite. One way of doing something similar in Spanish is to use the conditional tense: à ¿Me darà asà un minuto y medio? (Would you give me a minute and a half?)à ¿Te gustarà a ayudarme? (Would you like to help me?)Le comprarà as un dulce a su hermanita? (Would you buy a sweet for your little sister?)
